Weavers of Kolkata

Making many baskets, the skilled craftsmen sell beautiful jhuris (Bengali word for baskets) in the bylanes of Brabourne road. The baskets are used to keep fruits and odd nick nacks in many households.

Suresh and his brother have been sustaining the trade of the family. Weaving sturdy baskets can take anywhere from an hour and more. A strenuous, monotonous job, weaving of baskets demand focus and dedication. Proficient with the qualities, Suresh and his brother made beautiful baskets of varying sizes.

They’re the traditional yet peevish basket weavers in Calcutta, tucked away in quaint corners of the city, clinging to a dying art.

Much before the swanky stores started stocking their shelves with the fancy baskets, the weavers of Kolkata had been creating a steady supply for the homemakers of the city!
